The most expensive Spanish film ever made, Alatriste is an adaptation of the "Captain Alatriste" series - and I do mean it's an adaptation of the series, as the film tries to literally cram the first five books into a single movie.

(Originally posted on Channel Awesome on December 9, 2013) Swashbucklers have been a key part of my life for as long as I can remember. My interest in fencing, fight choreography, and pretty much anything having to do with sword fighting originally came from the movies, and from there, I got into literary sword fights as well. As I began writing my novels, and my own fight scenes, I'd turn to these books and movies for tips and pointers (pun only slightly intended) on how to choreograph them, and how I want them to play out in the readers' imagination. In fact, the sword fights in my novels, particularly The Brotherhood of the Black Flag, are designed to resemble the sword fights from movies, rather than realistic combat.

Tyrone Power sets out to bring justice to California in The Mark of Zorro, an excellent swashbuckler from Hollywood's Golden Age. (Original version posted on Channel Awesome on October 31, 2013)
Welcome to the INCspotlight, where I put the spotlight on classics of old that deserve to be remembered. (And while I'm in the process of moving my older blogs over from That Guy With The Glasses to the new Channel Awesome website, I'm taking the opportunity to revamp this review a bit and make it fit my current standard format.) I want to start this blog off by reviewing my absolute favorite movie of all time, The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn. It wasn't the first Robin Hood movie ever made, and it sure as heck wasn't the last, but it's definitely the best. Also, it's one of the first movies I remember ever seeing, and I love it now as much as I loved it back then - heck, maybe more. |
