As a huge James Cagney fan, I can't believe I've been doing The INCspotlight for as long as I have without reviewing a Cagney movie, and it's time I did something about that. Given that we commemorate Memorial Day this week, I thought I'd take a look at one of his lesser known and more underrated films - The Fighting 69th, set during World War I.

I've become wary of costumed epics from the late 1940s and 1950s, given how many of them are saddled with weak scripts and performances, not to mention a tendency to value style more than substance. However, while Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah still has those problems (some of the time), I still can't help liking it. (Original version posted on Channel Awesome on May 12, 2014)
This classic British gangster drama has been on my list to review for a very long time. However, with the recent passing of Bob Hoskins, now seems as good a time as any to review The Long Good Friday, his breakthrough film - which also marks the screen debut of future James Bond star Pierce Brosnan. High adventure, a story of friendship and pride, and the best performance of Sean Connery's long and distinguished career (not to mention one his favorite roles) - The Man Who Would Be King has all of this and more. |
