It's not easy being a Spider-Man fan sometimes. For such a great character, he's been subjected to so many horrible storylines: The Clone Saga, Chapter One, Sins Past, and the infamous One More Day, to name but a few. As a result, it's easy to forget how many good Spider-Man stories there have been over the years. And with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hitting theaters this week, I'd like to focus on one of those. From the 200th issue of The Spectacular Spider-Man (May 1993), this is "Best of Enemies," featuring the "final" battle between Spider-Man and most dangerous enemy, The Green Goblin - who was once his best friend.

Villains can sometimes be the best part of a movie. Heck, sometimes they're the only good thing about a movie. Street Fighter (1994) may have been god-awful, but I have to admit that I had a lot of fun watching Raul Julia hamming it up for all it was worth as General Bison. Sometimes I'll get excited about a movie solely because of who's playing the bad guy, either because he or she is well-established as being able to play awesome villains (like Basil Rathbone, Alan Rickman, or Sean Bean), or they usually play good guys and it's a chance to see them play against type (like Denzel Washington in Training Day, or Teri Hatcher in Coraline). And usually, I'm thrilled with the results. (Originally posted on Channel Awesome on April 14, 2014)
Don't let the title or the poster fool you. The Beast of the City is neither a monster movie nor a sappy romance, but one of the bloodiest gangster films made during the Golden Age of Hollywood. |
