The "Chinese vs. Japanese" theme gets an innovative twist in Heroes of the East, a classic Shaw Bros. martial arts film directed by the venerable Lau Kar-leung. (Originally posted on Channel Awesome on June 8, 2015)

I'm not anti-Hollywood, but I do think it sometimes has a problem with knowing how to use established actors from other countries - not always, but sometimes. My personal Exhibit B is Gerard Butler, whose role in Dear Frankie demonstrates he has far more acting chops than his American films have given him the chance to show. (Exhibit A is any martial arts movie star from Asia.) (Originally posted on Channel Awesome on March 16, 2015)
In the year and a half (!!!) since I started this blog, I've spotlighted the works of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and other martial arts superstars. This week, it's finally Jet Li's turn. (Originally posted on Channel Awesome on November 24, 2014)
Does a film about a sword-fighting, evil-hunting, scenery-chewing 17th century Puritan count as a Thanksgiving movie? Well, even if it doesn't, I think it's time for me to finally knock Solomon Kane off my to-review list, where it's been since I first thought about doing this blog. As often as I've mentioned Jackie Chan on this blog, it's funny that I haven't actually reviewed any of his movies yet. (My Hand of Death review doesn't really count, since Jackie just had a supporting role in that.) It was hard picking out which one to do first, but since Snake in the Eagle's Shadow is the film that made him a star, I went with that one. (Originally posted on Channel Awesome on August 18, 2014)
I am not by any means a Keanu Reeves fan (of his acting, anyway - he's a decent guy in real life). I am, however, a huge fan of martial arts movies and actors playing against type. With Reeves not only playing the villain but also making his directorial debut, Man of Tai Chi definitely got my attention. However, I wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did. |
