Don't let the title or the poster fool you. The Beast of the City is neither a monster movie nor a sappy romance, but one of the bloodiest gangster films made during the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Comedy duo Laurel and Hardy have gotten themselves into another fine mess in this slapstick masterpiece! (Originally posted on Channel Awesome on January 27, 2014)
Errol Flynn has never been given enough credit for his acting talents, not even when his career was at its peak. The Dawn Patrol in particular is an excellent example of what he could do with a truly substantial role. (Originally posted on Channel Awesome on December 15, 2013)
A lot of people are surprised when I tell them that Brian de Palma's Scarface (1983), starring Al Pacino, is a remake of an earlier film. This version of Scarface, directed by Howard Hawks and produced by Howard Hughes for United Artists, is an excellent movie from the days of Pre-Code Hollywood, and easily stands up alongside the numerous high-quality gangster films released by Warner Bros. around the same time. A stirring tale of adventure, mystery, loyalty, and stolen treasure, Beau Geste is an excellent film on all levels, one of many enduring classics from 1939. (Original version posted on Channel Awesome on November 4, 2013)
Legendary director John Ford directs the equally legendary actor Edward G. Robinson in a gangster comedy. While the results make for a good film, I'm not entirely sure they pull off the "comedy" part as well as they could have. (Original version posted on Channel Awesome on 10/31/2013)
The infamous Richard of Gloucester murders his way to the throne in The Tower of London, an interesting blend of horror and historical drama. (Original version posted on Channel Awesome on October 31, 2013)
Welcome to the INCspotlight, where I put the spotlight on classics of old that deserve to be remembered. (And while I'm in the process of moving my older blogs over from That Guy With The Glasses to the new Channel Awesome website, I'm taking the opportunity to revamp this review a bit and make it fit my current standard format.) I want to start this blog off by reviewing my absolute favorite movie of all time, The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn. It wasn't the first Robin Hood movie ever made, and it sure as heck wasn't the last, but it's definitely the best. Also, it's one of the first movies I remember ever seeing, and I love it now as much as I loved it back then - heck, maybe more. |
